The one new man in Christ Part 2
Let's see how the gentiles got to walk in the promises made to Israel:
Ephesians 1:22
And he (Father) put all things under his (Jesus) feet and gave him (Jesus) as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
Paul writes to a gentile audience saying that the Father put all things under Jesus' feet and made Jesus the head of the church which is His body. Now lets see what he says about how this gentile believer fits into the body of messiah:
Ephesians 2:11-13
Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision (Israel), which is made in the flesh by hands— remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
Paul tells the gentiles to remember that, before they believed in Jesus they were not part of the "commonwealth" of Israel. That word in the Greek means "community" or "citizenship". They were also strangers to the covenants, meaning, because they were not part of Israel, the covenant promises were not to them, and they would not have been able to walk in them. But now the gentiles who were once far away have been brought into the covenants, through the blood of Jesus.
Ephesians 2:14-15
For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.
In the Old Testament temple, the gentiles could not go all the way in, they had a special pace where they were allowed to worship. But the Jews could get closer to God's presence in the Holy of Holies than the gentiles could. There were walls dividing the Jews from the gentiles, but Jesus made peace between Jew and gentile on the cross by breaking down this wall! There is no more difference in God's eyes between Jews and gentiles. Now jews and gentiles can get equally close to God, through the same way or door, Jesus!
Now jew and gentile are both part of the church which is the body of Christ. We call this, the one new man in Christ. God removed the division, the apartheid if you will, between Jews and gentiles. So, the church does not replace Israel! The church consists of Israelites / jews and gentiles. The gentiles have been brought into the promises originally made to Israel! Hallelujah! Thank you, Abba!
Ephesians 2:18-19
For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,
Through Jesus, Jews and gentiles has access to the Father through one Spirit, the Holy Spirit. The gentiles are not strangers anymore but we have been adopted into the family/ household of God and now we also have citizenship like natural born Israelites have. Father God did not take Israel's promises away from them and gave it to other children. He adopted new children and included them into the same inheritance.
Ephesians 3:6
This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.
In Romans Paul uses the analogy of an olive tree. Yes, Israelites/ Jews who does not believe in Jesus were broken off of the olive tree, meaning they do not walk in the promises because Jesus is the root. But he warns gentiles not to be arrogant toward the jews because those who were broken off were broken off because of unbelief and if they come to faith, God is able to graft them back in!
Romans11:17-18
But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root of the olive tree, do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you.
V 23-24
And even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again. For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree.
The Lord warns the gentiles not to be arrogant towards the Jews and don't be prideful about the fact that you walk in the promises, but some jews do not, because you are not a natural branch in this tree. If you stop living by faith you will be broken off again and if a Jew believes they will be grafted back in again. Gentiles actually have a responsibility to call Jews into the promises; we are not supposed to keep them out. So, there are no favorites with God. Everyone has the same standing before God. None of us deserve anything that God gives, we can not boast about anything. ANYONE who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved!
Galatians 3: 28-29
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.
